Justification: An Introduction — How Sinners Stand Before a Holy God

How can a sinful human being stand before a perfectly holy God?

This is the most urgent question any person can ask. And the answer — the breathtaking, history-shaping, life-transforming answer — is the doctrine of justification.

It is the doctrine that ignited the Protestant Reformation. It is the doctrine that gave Martin Luther peace after years of religious torment. It is the doctrine that Paul places at the very centre of his letter to the Romans. And it is the doctrine that gives every repentant sinner the most precious gift imaginable — a right standing before God, not on the basis of personal merit, but solely through faith in Jesus Christ.

In Justification: An Introduction, one of today's most respected biblical scholars, Thomas R. Schreiner, opens this foundational doctrine with clarity, depth, and pastoral warmth — making it fully accessible to students, pastors, and everyday believers without sacrificing an ounce of theological substance.

The Doctrine That Changed the World

Few theological convictions have shaped human history as profoundly as the doctrine of justification. When the early church first proclaimed it, it turned the ancient world upside down. When Martin Luther rediscovered it in the sixteenth century, it sparked a reformation that divided and renewed the Western church. And when a sinner truly grasps it today, it transforms everything — their identity, their assurance, their relationship with God, and their hope for eternity.

Yet despite its monumental importance, justification remains one of the most misunderstood, debated, and neglected doctrines in the contemporary church. Many Christians have never clearly understood what it means to be justified before God — and as a result, they live with unnecessary guilt, fragile assurance, and an unclear gospel.

Justification: An Introduction is written precisely for them.

What Is Justification?

At its heart, justification is the legal declaration by God that a sinner is righteous — not because of anything they have done, but because of what Jesus Christ has done on their behalf.

Through faith in Christ:

Our sin is imputed to Christ — he bore our guilt on the cross
His righteousness is imputed to us — we receive his perfect standing before God
God declares us righteous — not merely makes us righteous, but pronounces us so
We receive peace with God — the hostility between holy God and sinful humanity is ended
We are adopted as children — welcomed into the family of God forever

This is not merely good news. According to Scripture, it is the good news — the gospel itself.

Schreiner's Comprehensive Approach

What makes this introduction outstanding is the breadth and balance of Schreiner's treatment. He does not simply define justification in isolation. He situates it within its full theological and historical context, examining:

Old Testament Foundations — tracing the roots of justification in the covenant, the law, and the sacrificial system
New Testament Teaching — with careful attention to Paul, James, and the whole canonical witness
Church History — from the early church fathers through the Reformation controversies to contemporary debates
Doctrinal Connections — showing how justification relates to redemption, reconciliation, adoption, and sanctification
Key Controversies — addressing the New Perspective on Paul and other significant theological debates with fairness and clarity
Practical Application — demonstrating how justification produces peace, assurance, and joy in the daily life of the believer

Why Justification Still Matters

The Reformers declared that justification is the article by which the church stands or falls — articulus stantis et cadentis ecclesiae. Nearly five centuries later, that declaration is no less true.

In a world where people instinctively feel that acceptance must be earned, where guilt is either denied or crushing, where identity is constantly insecure — the doctrine of justification speaks with radical, counterintuitive, liberating power:

You are accepted — fully, finally, and forever — not because of what you have done, but because of what Christ has done for you.

That truth does not grow old. It does not lose its power. And Justification: An Introduction ensures that every reader can grasp it, believe it, and live in the joy and freedom it produces.
