A Woman Who Changed Everything — By Giving Everything Away

Amy Carmichael could have lived a comfortable life. She was educated, gifted, and deeply loved by her family and her church. She could have served God in the country where she was born, surrounded by people who spoke her language and shared her world.

Instead, she spent fifty-five years in India — never once returning home. She learned the languages. She wore Indian dress. She became a mother to hundreds of children who had been sold, kidnapped, outcast, or abandoned — children who had no one else. She wrote books that have shaped the lives of millions of Christians. And she did all of it without fanfare, without seeking recognition, and without ever stopping.

Amy Carmichael is a beautifully illustrated children's biography — part of the Do Great Things for God series from The Good Book Company — that tells this extraordinary story for young readers. Written by Laura Caputo-Wickham and featuring stylish illustrations, it is designed to show children that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things — and that the ordinary girl from Millisle, County Down, who became one of the most remarkable missionaries in history, was simply someone who trusted God and kept going.

A Missionary Who Belonged Nowhere — and Everywhere

Amy Carmichael's story begins in Ireland, where she grew up in a devout Presbyterian family. From her earliest years she was marked by compassion — her famous decision as a teenager to bring a destitute woman into a church gathering, despite the disapproving looks of the respectable congregation, reveals a character already shaped more by the heart of Jesus than by social expectation.

After a period of ministry in Belfast and Japan, Amy arrived in India in 1895 — and she never left. She settled in Dohnavur in South India, where she encountered the practice of dedicating young girls to temple service — a practice that exposed them to exploitation and abuse. Amy began rescuing these children, and what started as a small act of compassion became the Dohnavur Fellowship — a community of hundreds of children, many of whom had no family in the world except Amy and the community she had built around them.

She became, to thousands of children, simply Amma — the Tamil word for mother. And she was exactly that.

A Story of Prayer, Perseverance, and Deep Faith

What makes Amy Carmichael's life so remarkable — and so spiritually instructive for young readers — is not primarily her achievements but the source from which they flowed. Amy was a woman of extraordinary prayer. When faced with opposition, with the limitations of her resources, with the complexity of the cultural challenges she navigated, and with the deep personal suffering that marked the later years of her life, she returned again and again to the God whose work she was doing.

Laura Caputo-Wickham captures this faithfulness in a way that is age-appropriate and genuinely moving — showing children a woman who depended on God not as a last resort but as a first response, and whose trust in him was formed and tested in the specific, demanding, beautiful circumstances of life in Dohnavur.

For Christian children in India in particular, Amy's story carries a special resonance — she was not a distant Western missionary looking in on India from the outside, but someone who gave her whole life to India, who loved its people, who adapted completely to its culture, and who became, in the deepest possible sense, one of its own.

Beautifully Illustrated With Extra Features

The book features stylish, engaging illustrations that bring Amy's world to life — from the streets of Belfast to the temples of South India to the community of children at Dohnavur. At the back, readers will find:

Extra biographical facts about Amy's life and ministry
A biographical timeline — placing her story within the sweep of history and helping children understand the world she was living in
Historical photographs — connecting the illustrated story to real images of the real person

These features make the biography not just a story to read but an experience to engage with — something that sparks curiosity, invites questions, and connects young readers to the real history behind the narrative.
