They Were Tired, Persecuted, and Tempted to Give Up. The Letter to the Hebrews Was Written for Them. And for Us.
The first readers of Hebrews were at a critical point. They had been exposed to public ridicule, persecution, and imprisonment. Some had already abandoned their commitment to Christ. Others were dangerously close to compromise — worn down by pressure, confused by uncertainty, and wondering whether holding on to their faith was really worth it.
The letter to the Hebrews was written to address that crisis with a profound and urgent appeal: keep your eyes on Christ. He is greater than the angels, greater than Moses, greater than the Levitical priesthood, greater than every sacrifice ever offered on every altar. He is the one mediator, the great high priest, the author and perfecter of faith. And in him — and only in him — is the anchor that holds when everything else gives way.
In The Message of Hebrews, Raymond Brown guides readers passage by passage through one of the most theologically rich and practically urgent books of the New Testament. While many find Hebrews puzzling — with its references to animal sacrifices, Melchizedek, and ancient Israelite customs — Brown identifies a timeless message that remains strikingly relevant in every generation. He explores the historical background, the key themes, and the enduring applications of Hebrews for Christians living under pressure today — showing how this ancient letter clarifies our priorities and points us to our only hope for faithful endurance.
This revised edition includes updated language and Scripture quotations and a new interior design.
What This Book Covers
Raymond Brown works carefully passage by passage through Hebrews, drawing out its key themes and enduring relevance:
- The historical background — Who the first readers of Hebrews were, what they were facing, and why the letter's appeal to keep their eyes on Christ was so urgently needed
- The supremacy of Christ — How Hebrews systematically demonstrates that Jesus is greater than angels, greater than Moses, greater than the Levitical priesthood — and why that matters
- The high priesthood of Jesus — What it means that Jesus is our great high priest — and how his once-for-all sacrifice surpasses and fulfils everything the Old Testament sacrificial system pointed toward
- The meaning of animal sacrifice — A clear, accessible explanation of the Old Testament sacrificial system and why Hebrews uses it to demonstrate the incomparable greatness of Christ's atoning work
- The hall of faith — Hebrews 11: The great cloud of witnesses whose faith sustained them through suffering — and what their examples mean for Christians holding on today
- Faithful endurance — How Hebrews calls its readers — then and now — to run with endurance the race set before them, fixing their eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith
- Applications for today — How Hebrews' message speaks directly to Christians living under pressure, tempted to compromise, and needing a fresh vision of the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ
What Readers Will Learn
- Why the letter to the Hebrews was written — and why its urgent appeal to keep eyes fixed on Christ is as relevant in our era as in the first century
- How Jesus is greater than every figure, institution, and sacrifice of the Old Testament — and why the argument of Hebrews is essential for understanding who Christ is and what he has done
- What the Levitical sacrificial system was — and how Hebrews uses it to demonstrate the incomparable, once-for-all sufficiency of Christ's atoning work
- What it means that Jesus is our great high priest — interceding for his people, sympathising with their weakness, and opening access to the throne of grace
- How the faith of the great cloud of witnesses in Hebrews 11 sustains and inspires Christians holding on under pressure today
- How to run with endurance the race set before us — fixing our eyes on Jesus rather than on the difficulties, disappointments, and pressures of the journey
- Why the uniqueness and supremacy of Christ is not an abstract theological claim but the most practically sustaining truth available to any Christian in any generation
