When Everything Feels Out of Control, Is God Really in Charge?
There are moments in every Christian's life when the questions become very real. Is God truly in control? Does he really know what is happening to me? Does he love me enough to act? And why does it so often look like the enemies of God are winning?
These are not new questions. God's people in Esther's day were asking the same things — and with far more urgency. Exiled from their homeland, stripped of the promises they had been given, and now facing the threat of ethnic cleansing on an unprecedented scale, they had every reason to wonder whether God had forgotten them.
The book of Esther is God's answer to those questions.
In Esther: Royal Rescue, Jane McNabb leads readers through one of the most gripping and beautifully crafted books in the Old Testament — showing how God's sovereignty, providence, and care for his people are woven through every twist and turn of the story, even when his name is never mentioned. Whatever the appearances, God is in control. The enemies of God and his people may be many and powerful — but their plans are doomed. God's plans are the ones that will triumph.
And as he delivered the Jews of Esther's day from seemingly unstoppable destruction, so he has delivered and will deliver all who turn to him in Christ. He is to be trusted — in all situations, at all times.
What This Book Covers
Jane McNabb works through the key passages and themes of the book of Esther in a series of accessible and engaging Bible studies:
- The setting of the story — The world of the Persian court, the exile of God's people, and the apparently impossible situation they find themselves in
- God's hidden providence — How God's hand is woven through every event in Esther — guiding, overruling, and working out his purposes even when he seems absent
- The courage of Esther — What it cost Esther to act, what her courage reveals about faith in God's promises, and what it means to act for God's people at great personal risk
- The schemes of Haman — How the enemies of God's people plot and plan — and why their plans are ultimately doomed to fail
- The reversal at the heart of the story — The stunning turning point when everything is reversed — and what it reveals about the God who overturns the plans of the wicked
- God's deliverance — How God answered his people's prayers in the most unexpected ways — and what that means for how we trust him today
- Christ as the ultimate royal rescuer — How Esther's story points forward to Jesus — the one who came to rescue his people from a far greater and more final threat
What Readers Will Learn

- How God's providence works — overruling human plans and weaving even the most unexpected events into the outworking of his purposes
- What genuine courage looks like for God's people — acting in faith when the cost is high and the outcome uncertain
- Why the enemies of God and his people, however powerful they appear, are ultimately doomed — because God's plans always triumph
- How God answers prayer in unexpected ways — and why his timing and methods are always wiser and more wonderful than we could plan ourselves
- How the story of Esther points forward to Jesus — the ultimate royal rescuer who delivers his people from sin, death, and the powers of darkness
- Why God can be trusted — in all situations, at all times — because the story of Esther shows that he is always working, even when he seems silent
