Bible Stories Every Child Should Know — More Than 120 Stories from the Whole Bible

There is a particular quality to a story told well by someone who loves both the story and the listener.

It is warm without being sentimental. It is clear without being simplistic. It takes the listener seriously enough to give them the real story — with all its drama and its depth — while loving them enough to tell it in language they can genuinely understand and genuinely enjoy. It sounds less like a lesson being delivered and more like a grandfather settling into his chair with his grandchildren gathered around him, beginning with the words that have always worked: let me tell you a story.

That is exactly the quality that Kenneth Taylor brings to Bible Stories Every Child Should Know — a newly illustrated collection of more than 120 Bible stories drawn from his Classic Bible Storybook, presenting the truths of the whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation in the warm, faithful, accessible language that has made Taylor one of the most trusted and most beloved names in children's Christian publishing.

A Voice That Children Trust

Kenneth Taylor — the creator of the Living Bible and one of the most significant figures in the history of making Scripture accessible to ordinary readers — had a particular gift for children's storytelling that is immediately recognisable and immediately enjoyable on every page of this collection.

His stories do not talk down to children. They do not oversimplify the narratives or strip away the genuine drama, the genuine difficulty, or the genuine wonder of what Scripture actually records. But they tell those narratives in language that is genuinely accessible to young readers — clear, warm, unhurried, and delivered with the kind of gentle authority that makes children feel they are in safe hands.

The description that has stayed with readers across generations captures it perfectly: the stories sound like they are being told by a kind grandfather to his grandchildren. That quality — the warmth, the unhurried pacing, the genuine love for both the stories and the children who are hearing them — is what makes this collection not just educational but genuinely enjoyable. Children come back to it not because they have to but because they want to.

More Than 120 Stories from the Whole Bible

One of the most significant features of this collection is its extraordinary breadth. With more than 120 Bible stories drawn from both the Old and New Testaments, it gives children a genuinely comprehensive encounter with the whole of Scripture — not just the most famous stories but the full sweep of the biblical narrative from creation to new creation.

Children who work through this collection will encounter:

From the Old Testament: The creation of the world and the garden of Eden. The fall of Adam and Eve. Noah and the flood. The call of Abraham and the covenant. Joseph and his brothers. Moses and the exodus from Egypt. The ten commandments and the wilderness years. Joshua and the promised land. The judges and the kings. David and Goliath. Solomon's wisdom. Elijah and the prophets. Daniel in Babylon. The great prophetic visions. And many more.

From the New Testament: The birth of Jesus. His childhood and his baptism. The calling of the disciples. The Sermon on the Mount. The parables of the kingdom. The miracles of healing and provision. The entry into Jerusalem. The last supper. The arrest, trial, and crucifixion. The resurrection and the appearances. The ascension and Pentecost. The growth of the early church. Paul's missionary journeys. And the vision of the new creation in Revelation.

Together, these stories give children not just individual narratives but an understanding of the whole sweep of God's story — how each story connects to the ones before and after it, and how all of them together tell the one great story of God's love for his world and his determination to rescue it through Jesus Christ.

Comprehension Questions for Deeper Engagement

One of the features that makes Bible Stories Every Child Should Know particularly valuable as a family devotional resource is the inclusion of 3 or 4 comprehension questions at the end of each story.

These questions are not merely checking whether children have paid attention. They are carefully designed to:

• Reinforce the key facts and narrative details of each story in a memorable, conversational way
• Help children develop their understanding of biblical concepts — connecting the specific story to the larger theological framework of Scripture
• Provide natural starting points for conversation between parents and children about the deeper meaning and personal significance of what they have just heard
• Develop the habit of active, reflective engagement with Scripture — asking questions of the text rather than simply receiving it passively

For parents who want story time to be more than just entertainment — who want it to be genuine theological formation — these questions make every reading session a genuine learning opportunity.

About the Author

Dr. Kenneth Taylor was one of the most influential figures in the history of making Scripture accessible to ordinary readers. As the creator of the Living Bible — the paraphrase that brought the Word of God to millions of readers who had previously found formal translations difficult to engage with — he demonstrated an extraordinary gift for rendering biblical content in clear, warm, genuinely accessible language without losing any of its substance or authority.

His children's stories reflect the same gift — the ability to tell the great stories of Scripture in language that children can genuinely understand and genuinely love, while remaining completely faithful to what those stories actually say and mean.

Falling in Love with God's Word — Again and Again

Reading these stories has a remarkable quality that parents and grandparents discover alongside their children: it makes adults fall in love again with God's Word.

The stories we have heard so many times that they have lost their freshness — the stories we think we know so well that we have stopped really hearing them — come alive again in Kenneth Taylor's telling. The warmth of his voice, the clarity of his language, and the faithfulness of his rendering all work together to make familiar stories feel fresh and beloved stories feel even more beloved.

That is, perhaps, the greatest gift this book gives to the families who read it together: not just children who love the Bible, but families who love it together — generation after generation, around the same stories, in the same warm voice, finding in the Word of God the inexhaustible richness that no amount of reading ever fully exhausts.
