Can I Lose My Salvation?

Can I Lose My Salvation? — Finding Assurance in God's Promise to Preserve His People

There are few questions that trouble the hearts of sincere Christians more deeply than this one.

You know your sin. You feel its weight — the patterns that persist despite your best efforts, the failures that repeat themselves, the distance that sometimes seems to open up between you and God. You have read the Bible's warnings about falling away, about those who seemed to believe and then turned back, about the possibility of something called the unforgivable sin. And in your more honest moments, a question forms that you may barely dare to put into words:

What if I am no longer a Christian? What if I have fallen away? What if I have lost — or could lose — the salvation I thought was mine?

In this concise and carefully reasoned booklet from the Crucial Questions series, Dr. R.C. Sproul goes directly to Scripture to answer that question — with biblical honesty, theological precision, and the kind of pastoral warmth that only comes from a man who understood both the seriousness of sin and the greater seriousness of God's grace.

The Question That Demands a Biblical Answer

The question of whether a true Christian can lose their salvation is not a peripheral theological curiosity. It is one of the most personally significant questions any believer can ask — because the answer directly shapes how a Christian understands their relationship with God, their standing before him, and the foundation on which their eternal hope rests.

Is that foundation their own faithfulness — which can waver, weaken, and fail? Or is it something altogether more secure — the faithfulness of the God who saves, who keeps, and who promises to bring to completion the good work he has begun in every one of his people?

Dr. Sproul approaches this question with the care and thoroughness it deserves — examining the relevant biblical passages, addressing the most significant challenges to the doctrine of eternal security, and showing that Scripture consistently points believers not to their own ability to hold on to God but to God's sovereign commitment to hold on to them.

Three Critical Topics Addressed

The Unforgivable Sin Few passages cause more anxiety among sensitive, sin-aware Christians than the biblical warning about the unforgivable sin — the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. What is it? Can a true Christian commit it? And what does the fact that someone is troubled by the possibility tell us about their spiritual state?

Sproul addresses this with the clarity and pastoral care it requires — showing what the unforgivable sin actually is in its biblical context and why the very anxiety a Christian feels about having committed it is itself a significant piece of evidence that they have not.

False Converts Not everyone who appears to be a Christian genuinely is one. The Bible is clear that there are those who make professions of faith, who participate in the life of the church, and who then fall away — not because they lost a salvation they truly possessed, but because they never possessed genuine saving faith in the first place.

Sproul distinguishes carefully and biblically between the false convert — whose apparent faith was never the real thing — and the true believer, for whom the promises of God's preserving grace are absolutely certain. This distinction is not designed to create anxiety but to clarify where genuine assurance can be properly grounded.

The Presence of Sin in the Believer's Life True Christians still sin. Sometimes seriously. The presence of ongoing sin in a believer's life is not evidence that they have lost their salvation — but it can feel that way, especially to those with tender consciences. Sproul addresses this honestly, showing what the Bible teaches about the difference between the ongoing struggle with sin that characterises every genuine believer and the kind of unrepentant, persistent, love-of-sin that characterises those who do not truly know God.

The Foundation of Genuine Assurance

At the heart of this booklet is a profoundly liberating truth: the assurance of salvation does not rest on the consistency of the believer's performance but on the certainty of God's promise.

God has promised to preserve his people to the end. He has promised that nothing — not sin, not weakness, not the attacks of the enemy, not the fluctuations of feeling or experience — can separate those who are truly his from his love. He has promised that the one who began a good work in his people will bring it to completion on the day of Christ Jesus.

When Christians learn to rest their assurance on these promises — rather than on their own track record of faithfulness — they discover a foundation that does not shift with the seasons of their spiritual experience. A foundation that holds when feelings fail, when sin discourages, and when the enemy of their souls whispers that they have gone too far to be forgiven.

That is the assurance Can I Lose My Salvation? is designed to help every reader find — and to rest in, deeply and permanently.

A Word to Every Doubting Heart

If you have picked up this booklet because you are afraid — afraid that your sin has finally gone too far, afraid that you have somehow forfeited the grace that was once yours, afraid that the warnings of Scripture are addressed to you — then hear this before you read another word:

The very fact that you are afraid is itself a mark of grace.

Those who have truly fallen away do not fear that they have. Those who have committed the unforgivable sin do not lie awake wondering whether they have. The anxiety you feel about your standing before God — the seriousness with which you take your sin, the hunger you still have for his forgiveness, the fact that you are holding this booklet right now — all of this points not to a heart that has abandoned God but to a heart that is still being drawn by him.

Read on. And discover what God has promised to do for every one of his people — all the way to the end.
