God Said Go. Jonah Said No. And That Was Just the Beginning.
Every child knows the story of Jonah and the big fish. But the story of Jonah is far bigger — and far more searching — than the fish.
God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, one of the most wicked cities in the ancient world, and call its people to turn back to God. Jonah said no. He ran in the opposite direction, boarded a boat, and tried to put as much distance between himself and God's assignment as possible. What followed was a storm, a desperate crew, a great fish, and a reluctant prophet sitting in the dark — until he prayed.
But here is where the story takes its most surprising turn. When Jonah finally went to Nineveh and delivered God's message, the people listened. They turned from their evil ways. It was one of the most remarkable turnarounds in all of Scripture. And Jonah — instead of rejoicing — was furious.
In Jonah's Journeys, Brian J. Wright and John R. Brown bring this extraordinary story to life for young readers, showing that the book of Jonah is not just a fish story. It is a story about a God of breathtaking compassion — who pursues a runaway prophet, shows mercy to a wicked city, and reveals his heart for all people everywhere. And it is a story that, as Wright and Brown show, ultimately points to Jesus himself.
What This Book Covers
Brian J. Wright and John R. Brown work through the key events and themes of the book of Jonah:
- God's call to Jonah — What God asked Jonah to do, why Nineveh mattered, and what Jonah's refusal reveals about the human heart
- Running from God — Jonah's flight in the opposite direction — and the storm that made clear that running from God is never as straightforward as it seems
- The big fish — What happened when Jonah was thrown overboard, how God provided a great fish, and what Jonah's prayer from inside it reveals about repentance and grace
- The message to Nineveh — What Jonah preached, how the Ninevites responded, and why their repentance is one of the most remarkable moments in the Old Testament
- Jonah's anger — The surprising and searching second half of the story — Jonah's fury at God's mercy — and what it reveals about compassion, prejudice, and the heart of God
- How Jonah points to Jesus — How the story of Jonah is not just a moral tale but a signpost to Jesus — who went into the darkness and came out again so that others could live
- Major lessons from a minor prophet — Compassion, obedience, and the heart of a God who loves all people and pursues them relentlessly
What Children Will Learn
- The full story of Jonah — from his refusal and flight to his prayer in the fish, his preaching in Nineveh, and his angry response to God's mercy
- Why obedience to God matters — and what happens when we run from what God calls us to do
- What genuine compassion looks like — and why God's heart for all people, including those we might consider enemies, is one of the great themes of the Bible
- How the story of Jonah points to Jesus — who, like Jonah, went into the deep, but unlike Jonah, did so willingly and for the sake of others
- That God's mercy is wider than we think — and that his heart for the lost extends to every person in every city in the world
- Why the second half of Jonah — his anger at God's mercy — is as important as the first, and what it reveals about our own hearts
- That the minor prophets have major things to say — and that the book of Jonah is one of the richest and most searching stories in all of Scripture
