He helps readers understand the autobiographical sections of Galatians 1 as a piece of theological argument, not just personal history: Paul’s account of his life is in service of his claim that the gospel he preached came from God.

Galatians 2 — The Truth of the Gospel The confrontation at Antioch — where Paul opposes Peter to his face — and the Jerusalem agreement are examined together. Stott shows how both episodes demonstrate the same thing: that the truth of the gospel is not negotiable, even when the person compromising it is an apostle. The great statement of Galatians 2:20 — “I have been crucified with Christ” — receives careful, extended treatment.

Galatians 3 — Faith or Works? The Argument from Experience and Scripture The heart of the letter’s theological argument: how are people put right with God? Stott works through Paul’s appeal to experience (the Galatians received the Spirit by faith, not by works of the law), to Scripture (Abraham was justified by faith before the law was given), and to the purpose of the law (it was a temporary custodian, pointing to Christ). Galatians 5 — Freedom and the Fruit of the Spirit “For freedom Christ has set us free.” Stott addresses one of the most important and often misunderstood themes in Paul: Christian freedom is not freedom to do whatever one wants, but freedom from the law as a system of merit, and freedom for the life of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit passage receives warm, practical treatment.

Galatians 6 — Bearing One Another’s Burdens The concluding chapter’s ethical instructions — bearing one another’s burdens, sowing and reaping, doing good to all — are shown to flow directly from the theology of the preceding chapters.
