A Letter Written in Chains — Overflowing with Joy

Paul is in prison. The outcome is uncertain. He could be executed. He has been separated from the church he loves most. And yet the letter he writes to the Philippians contains, by common consent, more joy per page than almost any other document in the New Testament.

The joy of Philippians is not the joy of easy circumstances or resolved problems. It is the joy of a man whose centre of gravity is somewhere else — in Christ, not in his situation. And it is the joy that J. A. Motyer traces with scholarly care and pastoral warmth through every passage of this beloved letter.

The Message of Philippians is a classic of evangelical Bible exposition — and this new edition makes it accessible to a fresh generation of readers.

About This Book

Now in a new edition with updated interior design, lightly updated language, and refreshed Scripture quotations, The Message of Philippians is part of the Bible Speaks Today series published by IVP — one of the most respected biblical exposition series in the evangelical world.

J. A. Motyer — Principal Emeritus of Trinity College Bristol, one of the most distinguished Old and New Testament scholars of his generation, and one of the primary contributors to the New Bible Commentary — brings his characteristic precision, depth, and warmth to Paul’s most personal letter. He identifies three major themes that filled Paul’s heart as he wrote: the unity of the church, the person of Jesus and what he has achieved, and the call to live a life worthy of the gospel. These three themes organise the book and give readers both a map of the letter and a window into its deep pastoral heart.

Working passage by passage through all four chapters, Motyer provides historical background, careful theological exposition, and application that is searching without being harsh — the work of a man who loved the text and loved the people the text was written for.

What the Book Covers — Three Themes, Four Chapters

Theme One: The Unity of the Church Philippians is deeply concerned with the health of the church community — with the kind of relationships that exist between believers, and with the threats to unity that were already visible in Paul’s day. Motyer traces this theme through the letter, showing how the call to unity in 2:1–4 and the specific appeal to Euodia and Syntyche in 4:2–3 are not separate concerns but expressions of the same gospel vision for Christian community.

Theme Two: The Person of Jesus — Philippians 2:5–11 The Christ-hymn of Philippians 2 is one of the great peaks of the entire New Testament — a passage of such theological density and literary beauty that it continues to generate debate and wonder in equal measure. Motyer treats it with the depth it deserves: unpacking the pre-existence and self-emptying of the Son, the humility of incarnation, the obedience to the cross, and the exaltation and universal lordship that follow. This is the theological heart of both the letter and the book.

Theme Three: A Life Worthy of the Gospel The ethical sections of Philippians — on humility, on rejoicing, on anxiety and prayer, on whatever is true and honourable and lovely — are shown to flow directly from the theology that precedes them. For Motyer, as for Paul, Christian ethics is not a set of imposed obligations but the natural overflow of a life captivated by Christ.

Joy Throughout Running through all four chapters and all three themes is the letter’s most pervasive characteristic: joy. Motyer does not treat this as a decorative feature but as a theological reality — rooted in the certainty of the gospel, the presence of Christ, and the unshakeable conviction that God is at work in all things.

What the Book Covers — Chapter by Chapter

Philippians 1 — The Advance of the Gospel Paul’s opening — gratitude, prayer, and the surprising declaration that his imprisonment has actually advanced the gospel — is examined with Motyer’s characteristic precision. The famous declaration of 1:21 (“For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain”) receives extended, careful treatment.

Philippians 2 — The Mind of Christ The call to unity and humility in 2:1–4, the Christ-hymn of 2:5–11, and Paul’s application of that hymn to the life of the church in 2:12–18 are handled together as a sustained theological argument about what it means for the church to have the mind of Christ.

Philippians 3 — Knowing Christ Paul’s account of his own spiritual biography — the things he counted as gain that he has now counted as loss — and the declaration that knowing Christ surpasses everything else are examined with the searching honesty they deserve. Motyer draws out the personal cost and the exceeding worth of what Paul describes.

Philippians 4 — The Peace of God The famous verses on anxiety, prayer, and the peace of God that surpasses understanding are given their proper context — not as a self-help formula but as the conclusion of an argument about what it means to rejoice in the Lord. Motyer’s treatment is both careful and deeply comforting.
