Discover the Depth Hidden in Mark’s Fast-Paced Gospel
Of all four Gospels, Mark is the most action-packed — lean, urgent, and relentless in its storytelling. Yet beneath its apparent simplicity lies a portrait of Jesus that rewards careful, prayerful reading. Who is this man who commands storms, heals the broken, and challenges every human assumption about power and greatness? Why does he seem to hide his identity even from those closest to him?
In The Message of Mark, respected British theologian and preacher Donald English takes readers on an illuminating journey through the shortest Gospel — uncovering its layers of meaning, confronting its hard questions, and drawing out timeless principles for Christian faith and life today.
About the Book
Mark wrote his Gospel with breathtaking speed and energy. Scenes unfold rapidly, one after another, creating a sense of urgency that still grips modern readers. But speed and brevity do not mean shallowness. A careful study of Mark opens up profound questions that have fascinated scholars and ordinary believers alike:
- Why does Jesus so often instruct people to keep quiet about who he is?
- Why do even his closest disciples repeatedly fail to grasp what he is doing?
- Why does the enthusiasm of the early crowds give way to hostility and rejection?
Donald English does not shy away from these questions. With the warmth of a gifted pastor and the precision of a trained theologian, he guides readers through each section of Mark’s Gospel, examining not just what happens but why — and what it means for disciples of Jesus in every generation.
What This Book Covers: Key Themes and Focal Points
The Identity of Jesus At the heart of Mark’s Gospel is the question Jesus himself asks: “Who do you say I am?” English carefully explores how Mark builds his case for Jesus as both the Son of Man and the Son of God — a portrait that continues to challenge and transform readers today.
The Messianic Secret One of Mark’s most intriguing features is Jesus’ repeated command to silence — the so-called “Messianic Secret.” Why does Jesus tell healed people not to speak? English offers a thoughtful and accessible explanation rooted in the unfolding drama of redemption.
The Failure of the Disciples Mark’s disciples are almost painfully human — slow to understand, quick to fear, and prone to missing the point entirely. English draws out why this theme matters deeply for anyone who has ever felt inadequate as a follower of Christ.
The Cost of Discipleship Mark’s Gospel is unflinching about what following Jesus demands. English explores the call to take up one’s cross, to serve rather than to be served, and to lose one’s life in order to find it — drawing out rich and practical implications for contemporary Christian living.
The Growing Resistance to Jesus From the religious leaders of Jerusalem to the misunderstanding crowds, opposition to Jesus escalates steadily through Mark’s narrative. English examines this resistance — and what it reveals about the nature of the gospel itself.
Receiving God’s Word Today Throughout the commentary, English connects the ancient text to present-day experience, helping readers not merely to understand what Mark wrote but to respond to it with faith, repentance, and renewed commitment.

About the Author: Donald English (1930–1998)
Donald English was one of the most gifted preachers and biblical communicators of twentieth-century British Christianity. Ordained in 1962, he served as a Methodist minister, missionary educator in Nigeria, and theological tutor before rising to national and international prominence.
He served twice as President of the Methodist Conference — the only minister to hold the position twice since the reunion of British Methodism in 1932. He was also Chairman of the World Methodist Executive Committee, Moderator of the Free Church Federal Council, and General Secretary of the Methodist Church’s Division of Home Mission.
Internationally in demand as a speaker and preacher, English was awarded an honorary doctorate by Asbury Theological Seminary and was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1996 in recognition of his service to the Christian church.
He combined scholarly integrity with a pastor’s heart — always writing and preaching to help ordinary people encounter the living Jesus. He died in 1998 after forty years of faithful ministry, leaving behind a rich legacy of books, sermons, and lives shaped by the gospel.
