They Could Have Given In. They Chose Not To.

Every one of these ten boys grew up in a world that put enormous pressure on them to abandon their faith. Some faced mocking. Some faced imprisonment. Some faced death. Every one of them had a clear choice: give in, or stand firm.

They stood firm. And the world — and the church — was never quite the same.

Ten Boys Who Didn’t Give In is the story of ten men who, as boys, began the journey of faith that would cost them everything and prove, in the end, to be worth more than everything. Their stories will grip, challenge, and inspire every reader who picks up this book.

About This Book

Published by Christian Focus, Ten Boys Who Didn’t Give In is part of the beloved Lightkeepers series by award-winning author Irene Howat — a series introducing readers aged 8–12 to the joy of reading Christian biography. Each volume tells the stories of ten remarkable Christians in short, vivid, narrative-style chapters that bring real historical figures to life through storytelling, dialogue, and detail that young readers will not easily forget.

This volume is distinctive in its focus on courage under pressure — on men who did not surrender their faith when surrender would have been easy, safe, or even seemingly rational. The figures in this book lived across seventeen centuries of church history, from the earliest days of the church to the middle of the twentieth century. They came from different countries, different traditions, and different circumstances. But they share the same defining characteristic: when it mattered most, they did not give in.

Irene Howat’s writing is consistently praised for its warmth and narrative energy. Each chapter — approximately fifteen pages, readable in one sitting or one bedtime — follows the same engaging structure: the boy’s background, the faith that formed him, and the moment when everything was put on the line.

Meet the Ten Boys

Polycarp — Bishop of Smyrna and a disciple of the Apostle John, who was martyred in the second century at an advanced age. When commanded to deny Christ and live, he gave one of the most famous replies in church history: “Eighty-six years I have served him and he has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?”

Alban — The first recorded Christian martyr in Britain, who sheltered a fleeing priest, was converted through him, and voluntarily exchanged clothes with him to allow the priest to escape — before facing execution himself rather than denying his newfound faith.

Thomas Cranmer — Archbishop of Canterbury under Henry VIII and Edward VI, the primary architect of the English Reformation and the Book of Common Prayer, who was burned at the stake under Mary I for his Protestant faith. In a celebrated final act, he thrust the hand that had signed a recantation into the fire first.

George Wishart — Scottish reformer who preached the gospel across Scotland in the mid-sixteenth century, was arrested, and was burned at the stake in 1546 — his death a catalyst for John Knox’s own ministry.

James Chalmers — Pioneer missionary to Papua New Guinea in the late nineteenth century who spent decades bringing the gospel to previously unreached peoples and was eventually killed and eaten by the people he had come to serve.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer — German pastor, theologian, and co-conspirator against the Nazi regime, who was executed by the SS in April 1945 just weeks before the end of the war. His writings — including The Cost of Discipleship and Letters and Papers from Prison — remain among the most profound Christian texts of the twentieth century.

Nate Saint — American missionary pilot with Mission Aviation Fellowship who was killed alongside four fellow missionaries in January 1956 while attempting to make peaceful contact with the Huaorani people of Ecuador — a story that inspired a generation of Christians to give their lives for the gospel.

Ivan Moiseyev — Soviet soldier and Baptist Christian who was repeatedly tortured by Soviet military authorities for refusing to renounce his faith, and who was killed — officially by drowning — in 1972. His story helped bring international attention to the persecution of Christians in the USSR.

Huang Shifeng — Chinese Christian who endured imprisonment, persecution, and pressure to abandon his faith during decades of Communist rule in China, and whose faithfulness helped sustain and grow the underground church in China.

Latimer and Ridley — [Note: some editions pair these two Reformers — Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley — burned together at the stake in Oxford in 1555, with Latimer’s famous words to Ridley: “Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man; we shall this day light such a candle by God’s grace in England as I trust shall never be put out.”]

Parents reading aloud who want to give their children a richer understanding of what it has cost Christians throughout history to hold their faith — and why it was worth it. Each chapter is approximately fifteen pages, perfect for one reading.

Sunday school teachers and children’s ministry leaders introducing older primary-age children to the history of Christian persecution and faithfulness, in a format that is gripping rather than grim.
