The Letter That Repeatedly Changes the World

Romans is not a quiet book. It does not sit still on the shelf. Across the centuries, this one letter by the Apostle Paul has ignited revivals, transformed theologians, and turned ordinary lives upside down. Augustine, Luther, Wesley, Whitefield — the list of those whose lives were redirected by Romans is long, and it is still growing.

Romans, as Timothy Keller has written, is a book that repeatedly changes the world, by changing people. Romans 1–7 For You is his invitation for you to be one of them.

About This Book

Romans 1–7 For You has sold over 100,000 copies — making it one of the bestselling titles in the entire God’s Word For You series by The Good Book Company, and a testament to Keller’s unmatched ability to make the most theologically demanding parts of Scripture accessible and compelling for readers at every stage of faith.

In this volume, Keller moves through the first seven chapters of Romans with the precision of a scholar and the pastoral warmth of a man who has spent decades applying this letter in the context of one of the world’s great cities. The result is a guide that is genuinely flexible — designed to serve the new believer discovering the gospel for the first time and the seasoned preacher who has taught Romans for years.

It can be used in three ways:

  • Read cover to cover as an applied commentary on the gospel message of Romans 1–7
  • Work through as a daily devotional with built-in reflection questions
  • Use for teaching and preaching — equipping small-group leaders and giving preachers fresh ways to connect Paul’s timeless truths with today’s world

A companion Good Book Guide — Romans 1–7: The Gift of God is also available at forthetruth.in, with seven structured Bible studies for small groups.

What the Book Covers — Key Themes

Introducing the Gospel — Romans 1:1–17 Paul’s great thesis statement — that the gospel is the power of God for salvation, revealing a righteousness from God received through faith — is the lens through which everything in Romans is read. Keller unpacks this opening with characteristic precision, showing why “righteousness by faith” is the most important phrase in the letter.

Everyone Needs the Gospel — Romans 1:18–3:20 Paul moves through a devastating diagnosis of the human condition — pagans, moralists, and religious people alike are shown to stand under the judgement of God. Keller traces Paul’s argument with clarity and application, showing how these ancient words expose the self-justification strategies that are just as alive today as they were in first-century Rome.

A Diamond on a Black Cloth — Romans 3:21–31 Keller’s title for the chapter on Romans 3:21–31 captures his approach: the darkness of chapters 1–3 makes the brilliance of justification by faith shine all the more. This is one of the most celebrated sections of the whole book, and Keller handles it with the theological depth and illustrative richness it deserves.

Justification and Abraham — Romans 4 Paul grounds justification by faith not in a new idea but in the story of Abraham — showing that this has always been how God saves. Keller shows why this matters for both Jewish and Gentile readers then, and for Christians across every culture today.

Peace, Hope, and the Love of God — Romans 5 The glorious fruits of justification — peace with God, access to grace, hope that does not disappoint, the assurance of God’s love poured into our hearts — are unpacked here. Keller draws out both the theological weight of these blessings and their practical, experiential meaning for the believer.

United to Christ — Romans 6 Paul addresses the most obvious objection to grace: does free forgiveness lead to moral licence? His answer — that believers have been united to Christ in his death and resurrection — is one of the most important and often misunderstood passages in all of Paul. Keller explains it with the clarity that has made his teaching on grace so widely trusted.

The War Within — Romans 7 Romans 7 is one of the most debated passages in Scripture. Keller engages the honest complexity of Paul’s description of the inner conflict between the desire to obey God and the reality of sin — and shows how the very anguish Paul expresses is itself a mark of genuine spiritual life.

What Readers Will Learn

  • Why every person — moral or immoral, religious or secular — stands in need of the gospel
  • What Paul means by “the righteousness of God” and why it is the beating heart of Romans
  • How justification by faith works — and why it is both absolutely free and utterly transforming
  • What it means to be united to Christ in death and resurrection, and how that changes daily life
  • Why the grace of God leads not to moral carelessness but to the deepest motivation for holy living
  • How to read Romans 7 honestly — and what the inner conflict Paul describes means for assurance
  • How the first seven chapters of Romans form a single, coherent argument for the gospel
  • How to apply Romans 1–7 to every area of life — relationships, identity, community, and eternity

About the Author — Dr Timothy Keller

Dr Timothy Keller (1950–2023) was the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, which he planted in 1989 and grew into one of the most influential urban churches in the world. He was the Chairman of Redeemer City to City — a church-planting network that has helped establish hundreds of gospel-centred churches in global cities — and the bestselling author of more than twenty books, including The Reason for God, The Prodigal God, and Prayer.

Keller held degrees from Bucknell University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary. He was widely regarded as one of the most gifted communicators in the evangelical world — able to bring the rigour of Reformed theology to bear on the questions of secular, urban, and sceptical audiences without ever losing the warmth and precision of the gospel.

In Romans 1–7 For You, these gifts are fully on display. Romans was a letter Keller returned to throughout his ministry — and this guide bears the marks of a man who had spent decades not just studying it but living it and preaching it to a city that needed it desperately.
