This is the tour that Providence offers. And no reader who takes it will emerge unchanged.

The Extent of Providence — From Electrons to Empires

One of the most important and most personally relevant things Piper establishes about divine providence is its extent — just how far the sovereignty of God actually reaches.

Piper does not present this theology of providence as an intellectual curiosity to be admired from a safe distance. He presents it as a living, practical, personally transforming reality — and he shows, with the pastoral urgency of a lifetime of ministry, the specific effects that genuinely knowing the God of all-pervasive providence produces in those who truly know him:

The intensifying of true worship The God of providence is a God of extraordinary, overwhelming, incomprehensible greatness — a God whose purposes span all of history and all of creation and all of time, and who governs every part of it with wisdom and love and sovereign certainty. Knowing this God more deeply — seeing the sightings of his providence across the whole of Scripture — produces not comfortable familiarity but deepening awe. The worship that genuine knowledge of the God of providence generates is not a warm feeling toward a supportive deity. It is the trembling, joy-saturated, face-to-the-ground adoration of creatures who have glimpsed something of the infinite greatness of the God who made them and redeemed them and holds them in his hands.

The solidifying of wavering conviction Many Christians live with a faith that is genuine but fragile — a faith that is sustained in the good times and threatened in the hard ones, that flourishes when circumstances are favourable and wavers when they are not. The theology of providence addresses this directly. Because the God who is sovereign over all things — including the hard things, the painful things, the things that seem to contradict the goodness and the wisdom of his purposes — is a God whose sovereignty is not called into question by suffering and difficulty. It is demonstrated through them. Knowing this solidifies conviction in a way that comfortable circumstances alone never can.

The strengthening of embattled faith The Christian life involves genuine warfare — against the flesh, against the world, against the spiritual forces of evil. And in that warfare, the knowledge of divine providence is not a spectator’s comfort but a soldier’s weapon. The person who knows that God governs all things — including the attacks of the enemy, including the specific trials that are assaulting their faith at this moment — is a person who can stand firm in a way that the person without that knowledge cannot. Not because they are stronger, but because the God who is fighting for them is stronger than everything arrayed against them.

The toughening of joyful courage Providence produces a particular kind of courage — not the reckless courage of someone who underestimates the danger, but the joyful courage of someone who is completely clear about both the danger and the sovereignty of the God who governs it. This is the courage of Daniel in the lions’ den and Paul in prison and the martyrs who faced death singing — people who knew that the worst their enemies could do was still within the sovereign purposes of the God they served.

The advance of God’s mission Finally, and most practically, Piper shows how the knowledge of divine providence is one of the most powerful motivations for missionary and evangelistic engagement that the church possesses. Because the God who is sovereign over all things — including the hardened hearts of unbelievers, including the hostile cultures and the resistant people groups — is also the God who has determined to gather a people for himself from every nation and tribe and tongue.
