An Invitation to Life in Full
Of all the Gospels, John is the one that feels most like an invitation. It is not simply reporting facts — it is drawing you in, asking you to see, to believe, and to receive what Jesus came to bring. “I came that they may have life,” Jesus says in John 10, “and have it abundantly.” The first twelve chapters of this Gospel are John’s case for why that is true — built around seven extraordinary signs that reveal exactly who Jesus is and what he has come to do.
John 1–12 For You is your guide into that case. Josh Moody helps those new to John dip their toes into its waters, while opening up new depths to those more familiar with this beloved Gospel.
About This Book
John 1–12 For You is part of the God’s Word For You series by The Good Book Company. In this first of two volumes on John’s Gospel, Josh Moody leads readers verse by verse through chapters 1–12 — from the magnificent Prologue (“In the beginning was the Word”) through the raising of Lazarus, the point at which the shadow of the cross begins to fall decisively across the narrative.
This is not a dense academic commentary. It is accessible, applied, and written for the reader who wants to understand John more deeply without getting lost in scholarly debates. At the same time, it rewards those already well-acquainted with John, uncovering layers of meaning and theological richness that even careful readers may not have noticed before.
Like all volumes in the series, it is designed for three uses:
- Read cover to cover as a devotional or Christian living book
- Work through passage by passage alongside your daily reading of John 1–12
- Use to teach — whether preparing sermons, leading small groups, or guiding a Sunday school class
A companion Good Book Guide — John 1–12: Life to the Full is also available at forthetruth.in for structured eight-session small-group study with discussion questions and a leader’s guide.
What the Book Covers — Key Themes
The Word Became Flesh John’s Prologue is one of the most theologically dense and poetically beautiful passages in all of Scripture. Moody unpacks it with care — showing how “In the beginning was the Word” deliberately echoes Genesis, and why the claim that the eternal Son of God took on human flesh is the hinge on which everything in John turns.
The Seven Signs — Windows into Who Jesus Is John structures the first half of his Gospel around seven signs: water turned to wine, the healing of the official’s son, the healing at the pool, the feeding of the five thousand, walking on water, the healing of the man born blind, and the raising of Lazarus. Moody shows how each sign is not simply a miracle but a carefully placed revelation of Jesus’ identity and mission — and what each one means for those who encounter him today.
New Birth and Living Water The conversation with Nicodemus in John 3 and the encounter at the well in John 4 are among the most examined passages in the New Testament. Moody brings freshness to both — showing how Jesus meets radically different people (a religious insider at night, a social outsider at noon) with the same gospel offer, and what it means to be “born again” and to drink the water that truly satisfies.
The Bread of Life and the Light of the World Jesus’ “I Am” sayings — so distinctive to John — begin in these chapters. Moody traces them carefully, showing how each one draws on the language and imagery of the Old Testament to make a staggering claim: Jesus is not merely a teacher or prophet, but the one in whom all of God’s promises reach their fulfilment.
Belief, Unbelief, and Spiritual Blindness A thread running through John 1–12 is the contrast between those who believe and those who do not — and the sobering reality that spiritual blindness can deepen the more a person is exposed to the light. Moody handles this theme with pastoral sensitivity, showing how the Gospel of John is both the most evangelistic and the most searching of the four Gospels.
The Raising of Lazarus — and the Shadow of the Cross John 11 is one of the most moving chapters in Scripture — Jesus weeping at the tomb of his friend, then calling Lazarus out from death. Moody shows how this sign is the climax of John’s first half, pointing unmistakably toward the resurrection to come, and why it triggered the religious authorities’ final decision to have Jesus killed.
What Readers Will Learn
- How John’s Prologue frames the entire Gospel and why it matters for understanding everything that follows
- What each of the seven signs reveals about who Jesus is and why John chose them
- How to read Jesus’ conversations with Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, and others as models of gospel engagement
- What the “I Am” sayings of Jesus mean and how they root his identity in the Old Testament
- Why John presents both the most open invitation in the Gospels and the starkest picture of willful unbelief
- How the raising of Lazarus functions as the theological and narrative turning point of John’s Gospel
- How chapters 1–12 prepare the reader for the cross, resurrection, and commission of John 13–21
- How to bring the profound truths of John’s Gospel to bear on ordinary Christian life and witness today
