The Question Everyone Is Asking

Everyone wants to be blessed.

The word is everywhere — on social media posts and motivational quotes, in the vocabulary of prosperity preachers and in the quiet prayers of ordinary believers. People speak of health and wealth and success as signs of God’s blessing. They pray for blessing on their families, their businesses, their futures. They measure the presence or absence of God’s favour by the presence or absence of the good things they hoped for.

And then they open their Bibles to the Sermon on the Mount — and encounter something that stops them completely.

Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. Blessed are the meek. Blessed are those who are persecuted.

Jesus said these things. He said that the very people the world considers least blessed — the poor, the grieving, the suffering, the persecuted — are the ones he calls blessed. How can this be? What kind of blessing was Jesus referring to? And what does genuine, lasting, truly satisfying blessedness actually look like for a Christian living in the real world?

In this concise and carefully reasoned free booklet from the Crucial Questions series, Dr. R.C. Sproul takes up these questions with the biblical precision, theological depth, and genuine pastoral warmth that characterised his entire ministry — and finds in the Beatitudes a vision of blessedness that is simultaneously more demanding and more liberating than anything the prosperity gospel or the self-help culture can offer.

The Beatitudes — Upside Down Blessing

The Beatitudes are among the most familiar and most misunderstood words Jesus ever spoke. They are beautiful in their language. They are comforting in their assurance. And they are profoundly, almost shockingly countercultural in what they actually say.

The world’s vision of blessing runs in one direction: health, wealth, success, comfort, popularity, security, the absence of suffering and the presence of everything pleasant. The person who has these things is considered blessed. The person who lacks them is considered unfortunate at best and, in the prosperity gospel framework, spiritually deficient at worst.

Jesus turns this entire framework on its head.

He blesses the poor in spirit — those who know their own spiritual bankruptcy before God, who have no pretence of self-sufficiency, who come to him with empty hands. He blesses those who mourn — whose hearts are broken over sin, over suffering, over the brokenness of the world that God is going to heal. He blesses the meek — those who do not grasp at power or position but who trust God with the outcomes that others try to control. He blesses those who hunger and thirst for righteousness — who are not satisfied with the world’s version of the good life but who long for something far deeper and far better.

And he blesses those who are persecuted for his sake — who have paid the real, personal, costly price of standing for the kingdom of God in a world that does not welcome it.

Sproul shows that this is not a list of virtues to be achieved or spiritual states to be manufactured. It is a portrait of the person who has genuinely encountered the grace of God in Jesus Christ — and who, because of that encounter, sees the world, sees themselves, and sees the future in a completely different way.

What True Blessedness Actually Is

The key to understanding the Beatitudes — and the key insight at the heart of this free booklet — is the recognition that the blessedness Jesus is describing is not primarily about circumstances. It is not primarily about feeling good or having the things we want or being spared from difficulty. It is something far more fundamental and far more durable than any of those things.

True blessedness, as Sproul opens it up from the Beatitudes, is the condition of the person who knows the grace of God in Jesus Christ — whose relationship with God is right, whose standing before him is secure, whose future is certain, and whose life is therefore oriented around the things that genuinely matter rather than the things the world tells us should matter.

This is why Jesus can call the persecuted blessed. Not because persecution is pleasant or because suffering is intrinsically valuable — but because the person who is persecuted for the kingdom of God is a person whose life is so obviously, so visibly, so costly oriented around the things of God that the world finds them threatening enough to oppose. That kind of life is a blessed life — not despite the suffering it involves but because of what that suffering reveals about the orientation of the heart.

And this is why the prosperity gospel’s vision of blessing is not just inadequate but actually inverted. It promises the wrong things, measures the wrong signs, and ultimately points people away from the only source of genuine, lasting, truly satisfying blessedness — the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

What This Free Booklet Will Help You Do

  • Understand clearly what Jesus meant by blessing in the Beatitudes — and why it is so different from both the prosperity gospel’s vision and the world’s understanding
  • Engage seriously with the specific blessings Jesus pronounces — on the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and the persecuted
  • Discover why true blessedness is found only in the grace of God — not in circumstances, not in health or wealth, not in the absence of suffering but in the presence of the living God
  • Understand how the Beatitudes describe the character of the person who has genuinely encountered Christ — not a list of achievements but a portrait of a grace-transformed life
  • Find genuine personal encouragement and hope in the Beatitudes — whether you are experiencing the blessing of prosperity or the blessing of suffering, poverty, or persecution
  • Engage thoughtfully with the prosperity gospel’s distortion of biblical blessing — understanding what it gets wrong and why the biblical alternative is far better
  • Share this free resource freely with friends, family members, church members, and anyone who needs a clear, biblical answer to the question of what genuine blessing looks like

The Blessing That Cannot Be Taken Away

The prosperity gospel’s blessing is fragile. It depends on health that can fail, wealth that can evaporate, success that can collapse overnight.

The blessing Jesus describes in the Beatitudes is completely different. It is rooted in something that no circumstance can change and no suffering can take away: the grace of God in Jesus Christ — the forgiveness of sins, the reconciliation to God, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the certain hope of resurrection and new creation, and the presence of the living God through every season of life.

That is true blessedness. And How Can I Be Blessed? — available completely free — is an invitation to receive it.
