The Gospel Is Dynamite. And Galatians Is the Fuse.

There are books of the Bible that inform. And then there are books that explode.

Galatians is the second kind. It is the letter that rocked the first-century church, recalibrated the Reformation, and has been setting hearts on fire ever since. It is Paul’s most passionate, urgent, and laser-focused defence of the gospel of grace — the message that we are justified not by anything we do but by faith alone in Christ alone. And in Timothy Keller’s hands, it comes alive with a force and clarity that is rare and extraordinary.

In his own words: “Galatians is all about the gospel — the gospel all of us need throughout all of our lives. It’s dynamite, and I pray that its powerful message explodes in your heart as you read this book.”

Galatians For You is the first volume in the God’s Word For You series from The Good Book Company — the pioneering applied commentary series that set the standard for accessible, gospel-centred, flexible Bible exposition for ordinary readers. And as the book that launched the series, it remains one of its finest and most widely used volumes.

Why Galatians? Why Now?

The letter to the Galatians was written to a church in crisis. False teachers had arrived — people who agreed that Jesus mattered but insisted that he was not enough. That faith in Christ needed to be supplemented by religious observance, cultural conformity, and earned standing before God.

Paul’s response was immediate, fierce, and theologically decisive: if anyone preaches a gospel other than what we preached to you, let him be accursed. There is one gospel. It is the gospel of grace. And anything that adds to it — anything that says “Christ plus” — is not a modified gospel. It is no gospel at all.

This was the crisis of the first century. And Timothy Keller makes clear throughout this volume that it is equally the crisis of every century — including our own. The Galatian temptation is not ancient history. It is the default setting of the human heart: to earn standing before God, to establish identity through performance, to find security in religious achievement. Galatians blows all of that apart. And Keller opens it up for the twenty-first century reader with devastating clarity and life-changing warmth.

How the Gospel Changes Everything

The title of the series — God’s Word For You — captures Keller’s whole approach in this volume. He is not interested in Galatians as an academic exercise. He is interested in what it does to the people who truly hear it.

He works through each section of the letter showing how the gospel of grace — when it really takes hold — changes not just what we believe but what we feel, what we fear, what we want, and how we relate to God and to other people. The freedom from the law that Paul describes in Galatians is not freedom to do whatever we want. It is freedom from the exhausting, joyless, identity-crushing treadmill of self-justification — and freedom for a life of genuine love, authentic community, and Spirit-driven transformation.

This is the gospel Keller spent his ministry preaching and applying in one of the world’s most sceptical, achievement-oriented cities. And it is the gospel that rings out from every page of this commentary with the same urgency and clarity it has always had.

A Uniquely Flexible Resource — Three Books in One

Like every volume in the God’s Word For You series, Galatians For You is designed for multiple uses:

  • Read it as a book — work through it chapter by chapter as an engaging, applicatory exploration of Galatians
  • Use it as a daily devotional — work through it slowly, section by section, with the built-in reflection questions for personal application and spiritual formation
  • Use it for teaching and preaching — a rich resource for small group leaders wanting to understand the text deeply, and for preachers wanting clear explanation and compelling application for their sermons

This three-in-one flexibility makes it one of the most versatile resources in Christian publishing — genuinely useful in multiple different contexts across a lifetime of ministry and discipleship.

Designed to Work Alongside Gospel Matters

Galatians For You is designed to work in conjunction with Gospel Matters — Timothy Keller’s companion Bible study resource on Galatians for small groups and individuals. Together, the two resources form a complete Galatians curriculum: Galatians For You provides the rich expository foundation, while Gospel Matters provides the structured discussion questions and group study material. If you stock both, they work powerfully together for a church-wide or small group Galatians series.

About the Author

Dr. Timothy Keller (1950–2023) was the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, New York — a congregation he planted in 1989 that grew to several thousand members and became one of the most influential urban churches of its era. He was the author of more than twenty widely-read books including The Reason for God, The Prodigal God, Prayer, Preaching, and The Meaning of Marriage — many of which have been translated into dozens of languages and read worldwide, including across India. He was also the co-founder of the Gospel Coalition and one of the most significant evangelical voices of his generation, known above all for his ability to make the deep things of Scripture accessible, compelling, and transforming for ordinary people.

Galatians For You was the book that launched the God’s Word For You series — and in many ways it remains the volume that best exemplifies what Keller was trying to do: open up a book of the Bible so that the gospel at its heart explodes in the reader’s heart with the force it has always had. He is deeply missed, and his works continue to shape the church worldwide.
